3rd International Congress on Contemporary East Asian Pop Culture Studies
March 19-20, 2026
Call for papers
Following the success of the first two editions of the International Conference on East Asian Pop Culture Studies, held in April 2024 and 2025, the Recognized Research Group Humanismo Eurasia is organizing a new edition, scheduled to take place in a hybrid format on March 19 and 20, 2026, in Salamanca, Spain.
This conference aims to provide a platform for the latest research in the Spanish-speaking world on contemporary East Asian pop culture studies, offering a thematic space for both early-career and experienced researchers from a wide range of disciplines.
The conference will follow a hybrid format: if a participant cannot attend in person for justified reasons (each case will be reviewed), they may participate virtually by submitting a pre-recorded video presentation. However, the speaker must be available online for the Q&A session.
Submissions must relate to one or more of the following thematic panels and focus on one or more East Asian countries. All proposals will undergo peer review by an international Scientific Committee:
- Panel 1: Sociocultural Studies – Social, cultural, and anthropological studies related to pop culture, such as fan studies and group dynamics.
- Panel 2: History of Pop Culture – Studies that take a historical or historiographical approach to pop culture, or that emphasize chronological perspectives.
- Panel 3: Gender – Studies focusing specifically on issues of gender identity, feminism, sexual orientation, etc., within the context of pop culture.
- Panel 4: Art and Aesthetics – Studies analyzing pop culture from an artistic or aesthetic perspective.
- Panel 5: Narrative and Discourse Analysis – Studies of pop culture works from the viewpoint of narrative analysis or the discourse embedded within them.
Presentations may be given in either Spanish or English and must not exceed 15 minutes in length.
To submit a presentation proposal, please complete the following form, which will be open from September 15 to December 15, 2025: https://forms.gle/iR7aCqh8Avsm7jhN9
The form requires: title of the proposal; an abstract (max. 250 words); five keywords. All to be submitted in both Spanish and English, along with the relevant information of the author(s): full name(s), affiliation, and email address.
Once the form has been submitted, the proposal will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent in January 2026. Upon acceptance, each participant must register for the conference and pay the registration fee.
Registration Fees:
- Presenter: €50
- Presenter (Member of the GIR Humanismo Eurasia): €25
- Attendee (without presentation): €25
Depending on attendance and available funding, a post-conference volume may be published in the Eurasia series by Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca (SPI 2022: Q2). Only those who present a paper at the conference will be eligible to submit for this publication, should the call for chapters be opened. In all cases, due to a likely limit on the number of chapters, submissions will be subject to double-blind peer review, with selection based on academic quality.
Please note that the deadlines for proposal submission, notification of acceptance, and registration may be subject to modification or extension, which will be announced via the official website and social media of the GIR HUME:
